The Benefits of Wholegrain Brown Rice

Wholegrain brown rice is the under-appreciated superstar of grains. When you put wholegrain brown rice on the table, you’re not just adding new flavours and textures to mealtime – you’re helping everyone eat a nutritious meal.

Brown Rice: A Whole Grain

Brown rice is considered a whole grain, and whole grains are essential to any diet; The Canadian Health Network recommends at least half our daily grain servings come from whole grains. Whole grains are grains that are sold with all of their essential layers and nutrients intact – only the inedible outer husk is removed.

Wholegrain Brown Rice: What it’s Made Of

A great deal of rice nutrition is found in the outer layer of the rice kernel, called the bran. In the case of wholegrain brown rice, this layer is left on the kernel, and is responsible for the darker colour and chewier texture of the rice, as well as much of the protein and fibre contained in the grain. In addition, brown rice still includes the germ of the rice kernel; this part of the plant is full of B vitamins and healthy oils.

Wholegrain Brown Rice: Wholesome Benefits

Two of the most notable nutritional benefits found in wholegrain brown rice are protein and dietary fibre. Wholegrain brown rice is rich in insoluble fibre and is also a natural source of antioxidants.

Wholegrain brown rice might take a little longer to prepare, but it’s certainly worth the extra few minutes. Take a look at some of our recipes for cooking with brown rice.
